How do you estimate yarn yardage from project size?
Yarn consumption scales with fabric area, but fibre, construction, gauge and stitch pattern all change the result. This planning model assigns a reference coefficient to each yarn-weight category — for example 0.65 yd/in² for worsted stockinette — then uses yardage = width × length × yards-per-square-inch, multiplied by a stitch-pattern factor. Those coefficients are calculator assumptions, not yarn-industry standards; a washed swatch or the selected pattern is stronger evidence.
Then skeins = total yards ÷ yards per skein, rounded up — always up. 4.2 skeins means buy 5, because dye lots change between production runs and a sixth skein bought three months later may be visibly different in the finished piece. If your gauge differs from the weight’s reference gauge, enter it: within this model a tighter gauge increases the area estimate in direct proportion.
The reference table: yards per square inch by weight
Everything this calculator estimates starts with one planning coefficient per yarn weight: stockinette yards per square inch at a reference gauge. Finer categories use a larger coefficient than bulkier categories, but the table is deliberately a model input, not a promise about every yarn carrying the same label.

The model then applies its stitch factors: cables ×1.2, garter and seed ×1.1, and open lace ×0.85. Use these for a first pass only; swatch measurement replaces both assumptions.

Why does gauge change the estimate?
Gauge changes both stitch count and loop length, so there is no universal one-variable conversion. For a transparent sensitivity adjustment, this calculator scales by your gauge ÷ the reference gauge. Worsteds assume 5 sts/inch, so a throw estimated at 1,560 yards becomes 1,560 × 5.5⁄5 = 1,716 yards at 5.5 sts/inch, or 1,404 at 4.5. That is the model’s response, not a substitute for row gauge or a measured swatch.
Two ball bands can both say worsted while recommending different gauges. Swatch, count over at least 4 inches, enter the actual stitch gauge, and compare the result with the pattern’s yardage. Row gauge and stitch construction remain outside this one-number adjustment.
The ground truth: rip and measure, or weigh
For anything precious, replace the model with measurement. Knit a 6-inch swatch in your actual stitch pattern, wash and block it as the finished piece will be treated, then unravel it and measure the freed yarn — around a niddy-noddy, a chair back, or loosely over a book. Length ÷ 36 square inches is your personal yards-per-square-inch: tension, blocking and stitch pattern included. Measure away from the swatch edges and use the resulting stitch gauge above.
No patience for ripping? Weighing gets close without destroying the swatch: the ball band states yards per 100 g, so yards-per-gram × swatch weight estimates the yarn used, then scales by area to the full project. It assumes even tension and comparable fibre — wool and cotton differ in density at identical gauge — so retain the pattern’s margin and buy enough of one dye lot for the planned project.
Worked example: a 40 × 60 inch worsted throw
A stockinette throw, 40 × 60 inches in worsted at the 5 sts/in reference gauge, from 220-yard skeins. Area: 2,400 in². Yardage: 2,400 × 0.65 = 1,560 yards. Skeins: 1,560 ÷ 220 = 7.09 — buy 8 skeins (1,760 yards), and the extra 200 yards is your insurance against a dye-lot gap and a binding row. If the same throw were a cable pattern, the 1.2 factor pushes it to 1,872 yards — 9 skeins. Cables are hungry.
Substitution: the pattern’s yarn comes in 220-yard balls but the shop has a comparable worsted in 328-yard (300 m) skeins. Same 1,560 yards ÷ 328 = 4.76 — 5 skeins of the substitute. Match gauge, not just the weight label: “worsted” covers anything from 16 to 20 sts over 4 inches, and the substitute must swatch to the same number or the yardage and the dimensions both drift.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is an area-based yardage estimate?
It is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed tolerance. Gauge, row gauge, stitch pattern, fibre, construction and personal tension all matter. For a project where running short matters, measure yarn used by a washed swatch and keep an appropriate margin.
Why round up instead of to the nearest skein?
A fractional skein is not purchasable, and yarn from a later dye lot may differ visibly. The calculator rounds the computed quantity up to the next whole skein; choose any additional contingency from the pattern, project risk and seller’s return policy.
Do cables really use that much more yarn?
Cables can pull fabric inward and change the yarn used for a given finished area, but there is no universal percentage. The calculator’s cable factor is a rough model input; measure a representative swatch or use the selected pattern’s yardage for purchasing.
How do I substitute a different yarn?
Match the gauge, then the yardage: swatch the substitute at the pattern's stitch gauge, compute total yards with this calculator, and divide by the substitute's yards-per-skein. Fibre matters too — cotton is heavier and drapes more than wool at the same gauge, so a cotton substitute changes the fabric's hand even when the math works.
Does this work for garments, not just blankets?
Approximately — enter the garment's total fabric area (back width × length, plus two fronts, plus sleeves) rather than one rectangle. A faster check for garments: most patterns state yardage by size; use that when available, and this calculator when you are designing your own.
