Jewelry Wire Gauge Chart
Jewellery wire is sized by the American Wire Gauge (AWG) number, where a higher gauge means a thinner wire: diameter in millimetres equals 0.127 × 92 to the power of (36 − gauge) ÷ 39. How is wire gauge converted to mm?
AWG is a geometric scale, not a lookup table: every gauge step multiplies the diameter by the 39th root of 92 (≈ 1.1229), and every three gauges roughly doubles or halves the cross-sectional area. The defining anchors are AWG 36 = 0.127 mm and AWG 0000 = 11.684 mm, giving the exact formula d(mm) = 0.127 × 92^((36 − AWG) / 39). One trap for jewellers: gauge numbers are inverse. 20 gauge (0.81 mm) is thinner than 12 gauge (2.05 mm), and the steps are not even in millimetres — the jump from 20 to 18 gauge is 0.21 mm, while 8 to 6 is 0.85 mm. When a pattern says “20g jump rings” and your supplier lists millimetres, buy 0.8 mm, not 2.0 mm.

Which gauge should I use?
Ear wires: 20 or 21 gauge. Standard pierced-earring findings accept 18–22 gauge posts; 20g (0.81 mm) is the classic handmade ear wire — thin enough to pass comfortably, springy enough in half-hard wire to hold its shape. Jump rings: 16–18 gauge for bracelets and pendants that take a pull, 20–22 for delicate chains. Wrapping and weaving: 24–28 gauge — thin enough to coil tightly around a frame wire, thick enough not to snap under tension. Structural frames, bangles and ring shanks: 8–12 gauge, usually dead-soft then work-hardened.
Temper matters as much as gauge: the same 18g wire in dead-soft bends by hand, in half-hard springs back and holds. Buy half-hard for ear wires and jump rings, dead-soft for wrapping and forging.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a bigger gauge number mean thinner wire?
AWG counts the draws: historically, wire was pulled through successively smaller dies, so the 20th draw produced thinner wire than the 10th. The numbering stuck. In jewellery, 30 gauge is gossamer (0.25 mm) and 4 gauge is a heavy bangle (5.2 mm).
What gauge are standard earring posts?
Commercial pierced-earring posts are 20–21 gauge (0.72–0.81 mm), and most earring backs grip anything from 18 to 22 gauge. If you make ear wires, 20 gauge fits every standard back.
Is jewellery wire gauge the same as electrical AWG?
Yes — the diameter scale is identical. The difference is temper and finish: jewellery wire is sold dead-soft or half-hard in sterling, fine silver, gold-fill and craft copper, where electrical wire is always soft-drawn copper with insulation.
How do I measure wire gauge without a gauge plate?
A digital caliper reading the diameter in millimetres, matched to the table above, is more accurate than a slotted gauge plate, which can compress soft wire. Measure in two places — cheap wire varies along its length.
What gauge should I use for jump rings?
18 gauge (1.0 mm) for general bracelet and pendant work, 16 gauge (1.3 mm) for pieces that take real stress, 20–22 gauge for fine chain. Saw-cut rings close flush; wire-cut rings leave a small gap to squeeze shut.
